AN INNOVATIVE GLULAM PLAYPOD
At Curvwood, we’re committed to craftsmanship, creativity and first-class timber solutions. We have the skills and knowledge to deliver meticulously finished glue laminated beams (glulam) for diverse aesthetic and structural builds.
We recently completed a playground project for Eastern Creek Quarter (ECQ), a new shopping, dining and entertainment complex in Western Sydney, managed by Frasers Property Group. Commissioned by Tilt, a multi-disciplinary team of industrial designers with a focus on bespoke built environment projects, we produced two stunning playground pods… structurally sound to handle even the rowdiest playground visitors!
And as Kieran Barker, Senior Industrial Designer with Tilt explains, it was a positive experience for all parties. “Everyone was very happy, which doesn’t always happen. It was a great result in terms of quality, time frame and collaboration with the Curvwood team.”

First-Steps Count Community Centre is a purpose-built living building, using biophilic design to bring nature into the building structure. This community hub in Taree will provide integrated early childhood services for families with children between the ages of 0-12. The facility will include a multi-purpose conference facility, meeting and training rooms, office space for co-located service providers, an activity room and consult rooms for various purposes including therapy, visiting medical consultations and hearing tests. br> br>
Curvwood stepped in to replace the beam manufacturer after changes meant they were no longer available for the project. The original glulam beams were designed to be curved and the local bluegum materials cut accordingly. However, changes meant the beams would no longer be curved. Curvwood was able to use the existing materials to create 9 laminated straight beams that have been fitted horizontally within the embrace of posts made from trees removed from the site for building. br> br>
While the building design is set in and exploits the views and natural shapes of the forest around it, such as using naturally shaped pods for meeting areas, a beautiful juxtaposition has been created between the engineered beams and the natural tree posts.
